Farmers still Grappling with Trauma from St Patrick's Day Bushfires

Social workers say 12 months on from bushfires that ripped through properties in south-west Victoria, some farmers are only just starting to talk about the effect of the disaster.


Twice a week, for the past 34 weeks, Sue Rondeau has parked a council van on the side of a dirt road in rural south-west Victoria, to provide respite to more than 100 bushfire victims.

She said some farmers are only able to confront the trauma of their experience now.

"People looking in might think 'oh the fences are up, the pastures are looking good'," Ms Rondeau said.
